Today we found out that Christopher Hitchens has died. He is not in heaven or hell or in the hands of some deity. He is simply dead. He will live on in our memories and in the things that he has taught us (which could fill volumes – most of which he has written), but alive he is no more…
Christopher Hitchens never wanted to be venerated or worshiped, and was quite well known for politely (yet firmly) admonishing people for gushing over him. Instead he would instruct them to put their energies into doing something positive for the freethought movement. It is in that vein that we proceed full speed ahead with our inaugural full week camp in August of 2012.
Children growing up in families who are free of religious dogma are surrounded by daily reminders that society is not a welcoming place for the unbeliever. Camp Quest NorthWest provides kids with a chance to completely immerse themselves in a fun and educational environment that is supportive and accepting of who they are. We love what we do and believe that this work serves an important purpose. We also believe that this is the kind of positive action that Christopher Hitchens was talking about.
And so it is with a heavy heart that I say, “Thank you sir, it was a pleasure to make your acquaintance…”
